What Can I Expect from Classes?
Many people are often intimated by martial arts classes. You won’t find the typical ego, competition or pressure with our classes.
We believe that learning and training should be fun, exciting, and done in the spirit of cooperation and in a family type environment. There is no room for ego or competition in our classes.
Students are encouraged to help and support each other to be the best they can be. You will measure your own progress against yourself – not anyone else. And you’ll make new friends that can last a lifetime!
Do I Need to Have a Martial Arts Background?
While a Martial Arts background can be helpful in certain circumstances, we find that sometimes, those with no background actually find it easier to learn the concepts since they have no preconceived notions of what they “should be doing”.
Do I Need To Be In Good Shape To Try Classes?
No. However if you are interested in getting in shape, learning a martial art like Wing Chun is a great way to do it. Martial arts are fun, and can be a great mental workout as well as a physical one!
When you start, we really encourage you to work at your own physical comfort level. Over time, you’ll notice great improvements in your physical strength and stamina. We even have people who have lost weight from starting their Wing Chun Classes!
Are Wing Chun Classes Suitable for Women?
Yes – Wing Chun is great for women. According to Wing Chun legend, the art of Wing Chun Kuen was developed by a woman, Ng Mui, and passed on to Yim Wing Chun.
Wing Chun focuses on using good structure, angles and sensitivity to help overcome an opponent – not brute strength. So it’s a great way for women to learn self-defense.
What Should I Wear to My First Class?
For your first class, you can wear a t-shirt (no t-shirts with questionable, or inappropriate logos/phrases), athletic pants (or track pants), non-marking soft soled indoor shoes (Markham) or bare feet (Mississauga and Kitchener-Waterloo).
Is There A Regular Uniform I Have To Wear?
Yes. The uniform is a Revolution Wing Chun Kung Fu T-shirt (which is included when you sign up for classes).
You can wear sweat pants, athletic pants or board shorts. Shoes should be soft-soled, non-marking, indoor running shoes or wushu shoes (Markham location ONLY – Bare feet at Mississauga and Kitchener-Waterloo).
What Does A Typical Class Cover?
A typical class will cover: Martial Foundations (basic drills, conditioning, coordination, balance, stretching, etc); Wing Chun Single Person drills; Wing Chun Two Person Drills (chi sau, pak sau, defenses); Wing Chun forms and theory.
I Heard that Wing Chun is a Martial Art That Focuses Mostly on Fighting – How Do You Teach it?
Wing Chun is indeed a very effective, practical “street-smart” martial art that you can use to defend yourself in practically any situation. Our classes will teach you the skills to do this.
However while we focus on training you in the study and understanding of Wing Chun, we are not a “fight club”. We do not encourage violence or aggression in classes.
Will I Learn Self-Protection / Self-Defense?
Yes. As part of the regular classes we teach self-protection techniques. We explain to you both how and why they work. You then get time to practice these techniques in class to build your own practical self defense skills.
I’m Interested in Starting My Own Wing Chun Teaching/Training Group Eventually. How Does Revolution Wing Chun Help Me With This?
We have an Instructors Training Program/Track that you can choose to follow when you join Revolution Wing Chun. This is a completely FREE option – that is included in your monthly membership.
If you’re interested in this, let Sifu Chuck know so that he can guide you and work with you towards that goal.
The training track will include giving you teaching experience (when you’ve gained certified instructor level status) in a safe class environment to build your skills. You’ll also get specialized instruction in marketing, class and curriculum development. You will also be listed as a certified instructor on our website and listed on our affiliated schools list.
Certified instructors will also occasionally have access to special seminars (extra charge) from Sifu Chuck on the topics of teaching, starting a Wing Chun group, marketing yourself online and more.
Can I Try A Class Before I Sign Up?
Of course – anyone is welcome to come out and try a free class to see if Revolution Wing Chun is the right fit for them! You can participate in a class – or just watch a class from the sidelines – whatever you’re most comfortable doing.
If you’ll be participating in the free class, the dress code is the same as stated above under “What Should I Wear To My First Class?”
